Fort Pulaski, National Monument on Tybee with My Beach House Rentals

Review from Trip Advisor:

Fort Pulaski is a wonderful side trip twenty minutes out of Savannah -  and one of it’s best kept secrets. The fort took 18 years to build and was finished in 1829. Used by Rebs and Feds both during the Civil War. You can see Hilton Head Island from the top of the Fort. It’s like a castle with a huge moat–complete with alligators, a portcullis and a drawbridge. It has barracks, cannons…you gotta see this!!!!!!!

The rangers are very friendly and informative.

Recently, there was a live five foot gator next to the visitors center that was viewed from the platform.3758

Annual Beach Bum Parade, May 18, 2013, Water Fight!!

tybee-sign-2 Tybee Island will host it’s annual Beach Bum Parade alongButler avenue on Friday, May 17. This splash-tastic annualtradition on Tybee Island features a parade as well as an

island-wide water fight offering fun for all ages. Spectators

lining up along the parade route on Butler Avenue will be

armed with squirt guns and hoses, as will parade participants on

floats.

Don’t miss this family-friendly water fight, which has

been a Tybee Island tradition since 1987. There’s no better way to kick off the summer

season on Tybee Island.

The Beach Bum Parade started in 1987, when a Tybee Island softball team called the

“Beach Bums” was challenged to a game by “Pier 15,” another local softball team.

The Beach Bums won the game and, afterwards, both teams drove up and down

Butler Avenue with police escorts as the players bombed each other with water balloons.

Before they knew it, there was a water fight in the making. Since then,

the event has become the Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade, known far and wide as a favorite annual island tradition.

Comments:

I’ve been 3 years in a row and every year i is more fun than the last. bring as much water
as you can or find someone nice enough (which shouldnt be hard at tybee) to let you
borrow their hose (theyre probably renting anyways).
head down to the beach afterwards and relax. see you there.

My Beach House Rentals is happy to say, “We have our school back.” The New Tybee Island Charter School

  • Open House For New Tybee Island School

It’s been nearly two years since there was a school on Tybee Island.  St. Michael’s School had been in the community for 60 years before closing in May of 2010.  But now there’s a new school ready to welcome the children of Tybee this fall.

Carolyn Jurick is President of the new school’s Governing Board.  She says, “Children bring life to a community .  Families filled the gymnasium for an Open House Tuesday night.  Michelle Dubois is excited about the new school for her child, “We are absolutely thrilled to have a school back on Tybee Island – all of my children went through St. Michaels and it was really terrible when it closed down.”

Replacing it didn’t happen overnight.  Jurick explains, “We decided to get this charter school started when the mayor said – does anybody know anything about charter schools?”  Carolyn Jurick did – having been principal of the state’s first ever charter school a few years back.  She and other members of the community formed a board that got to work.  They say the community support has been huge.  “We have some really good people – we’re blessed we have some folks who really stepped up and put in hundreds of hours to write the charter application – to get it through the local school board, to get it through the state – so it was an arduous process,” says Tybee Mayor and Governing Board Member Jason Buelterman.  But well worth the effort when you see the smiles on the faces of the parents and their children. Dubois says, “When they finally determined that they were gonna open it up – we were all just overjoyed and every parent on Tybee Island was overjoyed – we should have had a party.”  Mayor Buelterman says, “A school is really the essential focal point of a community and to not have had that over the past few years has been – has not been a good thing for Tybee – so to bring it back is very exciting.”

The school will focus on maritime education – preparing children for careers in things like shipping, marine science or tourism.  The academy begins taking applications from potential new students on Friday.  For more information, click the link with this story to visit the Tybee Island Maritime Academy website.Tybee Island Maritime Academy

Breakfast Club Chorizo Recipe. My Beach House Rentals recommends this!. It is worth it to stand in line for breakfast on Tybee.

Yes, it is worth it to stand in line for breakfast!!!

Owner and Chef Jodee’s says his favorite dish is the Breakfast Club Chorizo.

Have you tried the breakfast burrito???  Don’t miss it!

Jodee has shared his recipe.  Let me know what you think.

Chef bio: Jodee attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York and worked several chef jobs on the West Coast while trying to hone his skills. Then he came to Tybee and began working with his mother at her restaurant.

“One of the things that warms my heart is seeing folks who I knew as kids come back to the restaurant as adults and bring their own families.”

Favorite dish: Breakfast Club Chorizo

BREAKFAST CLUB CHORIZO

12 pounds fresh pork butt (Boston butt) cut into 1 inch cubes and chilled until very cold

½ teaspoon onion powder

3 tablespoons ground cumin

¾ ounces Spanish paprika (or smoked paprika)

2 ½ tablespoons cayenne pepper

3 ½ tablespoons salt

2 teaspoons garlic powder

2 teaspoons crushed red pepper

1 ounce vinegar

1 cup finely chopped onion

½ cup finely chopped garlic

3 ounces chipotle peppers in Adobo Sauce

3 ounces non-fat dried milk (or unflavored non-dairy creamer)

1. Place meat grinding attachments in refrigerator to chill.

2. Liquefy chipotle peppers with vinegar in food processor.

3. Combine all ingredients, including chipotle mixture, with diced pork, mixing very thoroughly. Chill for at least 2 hours (it must be kept cold through entire process.)

4. Using ¼-inch dye, run seasoned meat through grinder. Mix vigorously and quickly when complete. Chill immediately, or place in freezer bags, pressed flat, so it will freeze faster and thaw quicker.

Note: This is excellent for tapas recipes, scrambled eggs with browned chorizo, scallions and jalapenos, any omelets or your favorite wrap! We brown it and add it to our chili. Try browning it, remove from pan with slotted spoon — leaving the delicious ‘scarlet drippins’ to sauté your onions. Using bags of different sizes when freezing is a great idea — smaller ones for breakfast dishes, larger bags for chili or taco night.

New Girl Scout Cookie Is Nutrient-Infused

(Courtesy: ABCSmartCookies.com)Girl Scout cookie lovers accustomed to seeing items like peanut butter, chocolate, coconut and more chocolate on the ingredient list may do a double take when they see the newest cookie on the order form.

Alongside Tagalongs, Thin Mints and Samoas in this year’s Girl Scout cookie repertoire are Mango Crèmes, a crispy cookie featuring mango, coconut, vanilla and Nutrifusion™? Yes, Girl Scout cookies have been vitamin-punched.

The Mango Crèmes are the first cookie in the Girl Scouts’ long history to be partnered with NutriFusion™, the makers of a product that “supercharges” foods’ nutritional value by adding preserved all-natural nutrients, according to the company’s website.

ABC Bakers, the “official Girl Scout Cookie Bakers,” says in a description of the new cookie on its website that the cookies, “feature a mango-flavored creme filling with all the nutrient benefits of eating cranberries, pomegranates, oranges, grapes, and strawberries!”

The marketing of the product has led to some controversy online where a writer for Gawker said young Girl Scouts should be told they are “selling a lie,” and one blogger for LAist.com mocked the cookie’s tag line by saying, “So go ahead and eat that cooki e: it’s like you’re having a fruit salad.”

NutriFusion™ denies any claims that eating Mango Crèmes would be an appropriate substitute for getting one’s daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

“Girl Scout cookies come under criticism because it’s basically sugar and flour,” NutriFusion™ president William Grand told ABCNews.com. ”By adding our ingredient they have the ability to add the nutrition of fruits and vegetables into the cookie and that’s important.”

“People aren’t going to stop eating cookies, but because of the processing done by the food industry we can actually put some of the nutrition back in and provide a healthier alternative to the consumer,” Grand said of the product, formulated by removing the moisture from freeze-dried, macerated fruits and vegetables and then grinding them into a powder.

Though the NutriFusion™ in the Mango Cremes will give you, according to ABC Bakers, 15 percent of your Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of Vitamin B1 and 5 percent RDI of Vitamins A, C, D, E, and B6 per three-cookie serving, a cookie is still a cookie.

That same three-cookie serving of Mango Crèmes also contains 180 calories and four grams of saturated fat, more calories than four Thin Mints and the same amount of saturated fat as Tagalongs.

“Our product does not replace people eating fruits and vegetables but it provides an alternative, especially for people who are continuing to indulge in their favorite snack foods,” said Grand. “That’s a plus.”

ABC Bakers said in a statement the decision to add the more nutrition-friendly ingredient was “initiated by consumers wanting to eat great-tasting cookies that also have health benefits.” NutriFusion describes its product as one that can, “significantly increase the nutritional profile, and therefore the marketability, of food, beverage and snack products.”

The cookies, like all other Girl Scout cookies, are produced for a limited time once a year and are on sale now.
