Out-of-towners planning or considering a visit to the island later this summer are concerned about oil washing up on the beach. Tybee's tourism leaders are responding with facts from scientists and government agencies who classify the chances of an oil-fouled shore here as "minimal."

"Fortunately, the likelihood of oil reaching Georgia's shoreline is very slim," said Charles Hopkinson, the director of the Georgia Sea Grant Program and a University of Georgia professor, "and if it does get here, it is probably going to be very diluted."

Geography should help protect Tybee's beaches. The Gulf Stream would be the current to carry the oil slick up the East Coast, and the Gulf Stream passes 70 miles offshore of Tybee at the edge of the continental shelf.

For the oil to find its way to the coast would require a seldom-seen "series of environmental conditions," according to University of Georgia marine scientist Renato Castelao.

The computer models put together last week by the National Center for Atmospheric Research and aired by the news networks reflect the scientists' opinions. The Georgia Coast is the only part of the stretch of Atlantic coastline from the Florida Keys to Virginia Beach projected to be free of diluted oil.
